Two girls will be missing

This failure led to a complete reorganization of law enforcement

The kidnapping and murder of several teenage girls by Marc Dutroux in 1996 caused a national shock. The film tells the story from the perspective of Paul Chartier, a police officer who searched the cellar where the girls were hiding. He heard them moaning, but was unable to find them because of the limited search warrant. These events happened in reality, but Du Welz mixes fact and fiction in his film.

Charlier knows he is right, but his superiors have other priorities

He portrays the policeman as an ordinary street cop who prefers his feelings to rules and procedures. In the end, his persistence and lack of respect for authority lead not only to his downfall, the end of his marriage, but also to his ultimate moral triumph. The film is both a thrilling police thriller and a character study of Charlier. His strong will is the result of his upbringing: his parents were far from law-abiding.

Visually, the film is a joy to watch

He is on the 'right side' He ignores the rules if they get in the way. The deserted industrial wasteland of Charleroi, where the kidnappings took place, is used to its fullest. Also, the despair of the city, where illegal activities seem to be growing, adds to the dark atmosphere. The film documents an important part of Belgian history and is an interesting interpretation for those who followed the events of the time.

But some of the events are clearly fictional

In order to make an exciting police thriller with political elements, the film abandoned historical accuracy.
